Michael Garfield and Judith Butler's former relationship
Hallowe'en PartyMichael Garfield and Judith Butler’s youthful love was passionate but brief, and its hidden consequence shaped Judith’s life with Miranda Butler. Judith left Garfield without telling him she was pregnant, invented a story to explain her child’s birth, and later met him again by chance at Woodleigh Common, where Miranda remained unaware that he was her father.
A Love Ended by Fear
As a young woman, Judith fell deeply in love with Garfield. Her fear was not of a particular threat or of anything he might do to her; she was frightened by what she sensed in his nature. She remembered his gentleness alongside a coldness and ruthlessness beneath it, and feared even his intense devotion to beauty and creation in his work. That unease led her to leave him.
The Secret and Their Reunion
Judith did not tell Garfield that she was going to have his child. She went away, gave birth to Miranda, and made up a story about a pilot husband who had died in a crash. After moving about restlessly, she came more or less by chance to Woodleigh Common, where she found secretarial work through contacts in Medchester.
Garfield’s later arrival at Woodleigh Common, where he came to work in Quarry Wood, brought the former lovers into the same place again. Judith said that by then the past was over for both of them. Their reunion did not reveal the truth to Miranda: Judith confirmed that Miranda had no idea Garfield was her father, and that their meeting had been a pure coincidence.
Miranda and the Inherited Likeness
Judith’s concern arose later, when she realized how often Miranda went into Quarry Wood. Poirot recognized a bond and natural affinity between Miranda and Garfield, and said that he had seen the likeness between them. The resemblance linked father and daughter even though Miranda did not know their relationship. Poirot sharply distinguished their characters: he associated Garfield’s pursuit of beauty with evil, while describing Miranda as innocent and wise, without that evil.
